Cyclists

What is a two-stage turn queue box?

Graphic with Two-Stage Turn Queue Box

A two-stage turn queue box is a system designed to allow bicyclists to safely turn left across heavy traffic. These turns are located at the intersections of S Lumpkin St/University Ct/Cedar St and S Lumpkin St/W Rutherford St.

When traveling on University Ct and turning left onto S Lumpkin St, follow these steps:

  1. Once you have a green light, ride straight across to the green queue box and stop.
  2. Rotate your bike inside the box to prepare to move with the S Lumpkin St traffic and wait.
  3. Once the light for S Lumpkin St traffic turns green, proceed towards your destination.
Can I transport my bicycle on the UGA buses?

Most UGA buses are equipped with bicycle racks, allowing riders to easily transport their bicycles. The racks hold two bicycles at a time and take roughly 15-30 seconds to load and unload.

Watch this video for a quick tutorial on how to use the bicycle racks:

Pedestrians

Do pedestrians have to follow any rules or regulations?

Yes. Just as there are Georgia laws relating to cars and bicycles, there are also laws for pedestrians.

Visit the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety website for details regarding Georgia laws on pedestrian safety.

What do I do if there is no sidewalk?

If a sidewalk is not available, a pedestrian should walk or run against oncoming traffic and be as close to the outside edge of the roadway as possible.

How can I find directions for walking around campus?

You can find point-to-point walking directions by using the Map & Directions feature in the UGA Mobile App.

Drivers

What is distracted driving?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is “any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.”

What is Georgia’s Hands-Free Law?

The Hands-Free Georgia Act established numerous rules and regulations regarding the use of cellphones while driving, including the following:

  • Drivers cannot have a phone in their hand or touching any part of their body while talking on their phone while driving.
  • Even with hands-free technology, drivers cannot write, read or send text messages, e-mails, social media content and other internet data while on the road.

Learn more about this law at www.gahighwaysafety.org/hands-free-law.

Do I need a vehicle to navigate campus?

A vehicle is not necessary to get around campus!

Both UGA Transit and Athens-Clarke County Transit operate multiple bus routes that travel between the UGA campus and common off-campus destinations. These buses can also get you where you need to go practically anywhere on campus!

Campus is also highly walkable, with walking paths to get you anywhere you need to go, and ample time between classes to get there. Walking is often a quicker commuting option than you think!

Does UGA offer free parking?

There is no free parking on the main UGA campus or the Health Sciences Campus during weekday operating hours. All areas require a permit or a pass to park.

Visitors and those with no permit may pay to park in a visitor deck or ParkMobile lot. Some areas are not enforced during evenings, nights, and weekends. Learn more about enforcement hours here.

How do I request a parking permit?

Visit tps.uga.edu/permits/registration to learn how to request a parking permit.

E-Scooter & Micromobility Users

Can I ride my e-scooter/electric bike/hoverboard on the sidewalk?

No. Georgia law requires that all micromobility users ride on the road or in bike lanes. Sidewalks and crosswalks are reserved for pedestrian use. If you need to utilize a sidewalk or crosswalk, you must dismount and walk with your device.

Can I bring my e-scooter/electric bike/hoverboard inside campus buildings?

Micromobility devices are not permitted inside campus buildings. Instead, you can park your device in a designated bike rack outside of the building.
